Beautiful interiors begin with a better brief

A room-by-room scope helps you compare materials, hardware, exclusions and handover responsibilities before choosing an interior provider.

HomeHNI provides separate quotation and modular-kitchen planning checklists.

Why it matters

Record what already exists, what needs replacement and when the home will be ready for measurement. Ask how the provider calculates quantities and how substitutions or extra work will be approved. Distinguish appliances, civil work, electrical changes and debris removal from cabinetry and finishes. Keep essential repairs separate from decorative purchases.

Turn the design idea into a measurable brief

List each room and the work required: storage, cabinetry, lighting, finishes, appliances and any civil changes. Record existing dimensions and arrange site measurements before comparing final quotes. Note who will use the room, what must be stored and which existing items must fit.

Specify the material, thickness, finish, hardware range and installation scope for major items. Ask the provider to identify quantities and the method of measurement. Two quotations using the same room name may include very different work, so a total price alone is a weak comparison.

Control exclusions, changes and completion

Keep demolition, plumbing, electrical work, transport, debris removal and taxes visible as included or excluded items. Record how changes will be approved and priced before work begins. A substitution should state the replacement specification and its effect on cost and timing.

Link payment milestones to agreed deliverables, with a written process for inspection and correcting defects. Discuss the delivery calendar, site readiness, protection of existing finishes and responsibility for damage. At handover, retain drawings, product details, warranty documents and a snag list with owners and target dates.

Before you decide

Prepare a brief and ask the provider to confirm coverage, site-measurement arrangements and a written quote.

  • Use one room-by-room scope for every quotation.
  • Confirm materials, hardware, quantities and exclusions.
  • Approve changes in writing before execution.
  • Keep handover documents and a dated snag list.
